Travellers at Fuengirola bus station are spoilt by the many public bus connections for exploring the beautiful region of Andalucia cheaply and in comfort

From Fuengirola bus station on the Costa del Sol there are so many trips available to other Andalucian towns and cities using the cheap public bus services and it’s easy to make some interesting journeys from the coast into the ‘real Spain’.

The holiday resort of Fuengirola is one of the most popular in Andalucia. Many visitors are drawn to the sunshine, beaches and nightlife but others like to escape the hustle and bustle and explore some of the beauty of the surrounding areas in relative comfort.

Some destinations are a little far for a day trip but others offer return buses later in the day or early evening that give sufficient time to enjoy a reasonable amount of time.

Visit Andalucian Towns and Cities Cheaply and Comfortably by Public Bus

Bus travel fares in Andalucia are very cheap and this is one reason for choosing a public bus service rather than an organized tour. Visitors can please themselves and see what they want in a limited time rather than be herded around in a group.

However, a trip of this typle needs to be planned carefully so that no time is wasted.

Timetable information is available from the Portillo bus company operating out of Fuengirola bus station.

Buses leave Fuengirola bus station for the following destinations and the approximate journey times, for both regular and direct routes are shown alongside. Some suggestions for onward travel by other bus companiews are given, together with contact information.

Algeciras can be reached in 2 hours or less and some departures call in at the Port. Other destinations such as Tarifa and the Atlantic coastal resorts can be reached via the Comes company.

Cadiz, Spain’s oldest city is just a 4hours 30 minutes or less drive from Fuengirola. Cádiz is an important cruise stop and such a wonderful traditional old city worthy of a weekend stay.

However, there is a daily bus at 08.15 and a return bus at 20.15 so a day trip could be done taking in all the sights in the historical centre. Cádiz province has lots to offer and the Comes bus company runs services to all areas from the city.

Cordoba, once the capital of Al Andalous is just a 4 hour drive through olive groves and fabulous countryside. All the must- see sights are in the compact historical centre of this city so Cordoba is perfect for a day trip. Narrow cobbled streets packed with interesting architecture, wrought ironwork and colourful balconies and patios. Other interesting towns and villages in Córdoba province can be reached from the city using Carrera Autocares.

Granada, known as the last Moorish stronghold is a 3hour 30minute or less drive away. With the backdrop of the Sierra Nevada, the Alhambra Palace is the key sight and any remaining time is best spent wandering in the picturesque Moorish Albaicín district. Tickets for the Alhambra should be reserved well in advance. Travellers can reach the Alpujarras, Guadix and La Calahorra as well as many other points in Granada Province using the Alsa bus company.

La Linea is the destination for visiting Gibraltar although the bus station is in the town and a walk away from the border crossing. The maximum journey time is 2 hours.

The Hillside Historical Town of Ronda Should not be Missed

Ronda is one of Andalucia’s most visited towns, high up in the mountains on the western Costa del Sol. Journey time from Fuengirola is approximately 1 hour 45 minutes with several departures a day making it an ideal day trip destination. The bus station is 10 minute walk from the Puente Nuevo where the Medieval and 18th century Ronda meet and enjoyable walks can be taken.

From Ronda there are regular buses to Seville and other countryside areas using the Comes bus line.

Seville is a 4 hour drive from Fuengirola but with the first bus leaving Fuengirola at 07.35 and the last bus leaving Seville at 18.45 there is time to savour Andalucia´s capital city as long as the day was well planned. Magnificent buildings, churches, gardens, parks, fill the city. The city sightseeing bus is a good way to get acquainted quickly and for those wanting a bit more style, the horse and carriage rides around the city leave from the cathedral.

From the city two bus companies offer services to various parts of the province and over to Jerez and Huelva province - Comes and the Damas company.

So many destinations can be reached from Fuengirola bus station, using comfortable buses and making the most of the cheap fares. Andalucia is a beautiful contrasting region of Spain and the public bus service makes it easy to explore.
