Benalmádena Costa has many tourist attractions but perhaps the best and most exciting is the Teleférico (cable car).
Overlooking Benalmádena Costa on the Costa del Sol is the 800mt high Calamorro Mountain. From the town of Arroyo de la Miel, the 4 seater cable car climbs up across the lower slopes to the summit of the mountain. The ride takes 15 minutes and takes passengers 3kms inland crossing the Tivoli fun fair and then the A7 highway before the finest views on the coast gradually unfold.
The town of Arroyo de la Miel, Benalmádena Costa, Benalmádena Pueblo and then from higher up, the whole coastline between Malaga and Fuengirola can be seen. The cable car runs all year round from 11am and during the summer months it is open until midnight.
Other times of the year depending on the month it closes between 5pm and 7pm. Weather conditions such as wind or rain will affect the operation too and it will close on certain days for essential maintenance. The website will give a complete timetable and contact numbers.
For the best views of the coast and surrounding countryside the summit of the Calamorro mountain is hard to beat. To the east, on a clear day, Málaga city, its port and international airport are all visible.
The huge tourist resort of Benalmádena Costa lies directly south and to the west the old Moorish village of Benalmádena Pueblo and Fuengirola can be seen clearly. North Africa is quite close and sometimes its coastline can be made out while to the north are some fabulous views of the mountainous inland landscape, littered with tracks and footpaths.
Several miradors (view points) are located around the summit and pathways have been cut into the rock. There are handrails but the ground is quite uneven. Walking boots or reasonably sturdy flat shoes are recommended
Mountain Walking on the Many Footpaths Leading From the Summit
The attraction is not only the cable car ride itself but at the summit there are a number of footpaths taking walkers down the mountain and through the stunning countryside.
Daily Bird of Prey Displays
In Bird Valley, falcons, golden eagles, owls and vultures amongst others, fly freely in their own beautiful natural surroundings. Artificial prey is used to demonstrate the power of these majestic birds – it is certainly a sight not to be missed.
The Teleférico Departure Point
The Teleférico station is next to Tivoli Amusement Park in the town of Arroyo de la Miel, 2 kms inland from the coast. Access is from the A7 exiting at Arroyo de la Miel and following signs to Tivoli where there is a large car park. By train, the station is Arroyo de la Miel and the local bus from Torremolinos or Mijas stops at the train station.
The Benalmádena sightseeing bus stops at the cable car station and next to the ticket office is a comfortable bar.
Facilities at the Summit
The upper station has a restaurant, a cabin selling ice creams and drinks, toilets, and a photograph service which is completely optional.
Discount Entrance Prices for Other Attractions Available
The Benalmádena Teleférico is part of the Selwo Group who run other attractions on the Costa del Sol. They regularly offer reduced entrance prices to all their attractions in the form of a Selwo pack, which offers a good saving especially if return visits are made.
Benalmádena’s Teleférico Has Something for Everyone
Photographers, bird lovers and visitors looking for something different and exciting to do will find the Teleférico a memorable experience. Walkers have a great choice of footpaths to explore as an alternative to a return ride down on the cable car.
